The Internet and the World Wide Web (Reflection)

I have gained some new IT knowledge from the powerpoint slide on "The Internet and the World Wide Web". Below is a compilation of what I have learnt:

1) IP Address

IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is a unique number that identifies any computer that is connected to the internet.

2) URL

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is an address for a webpage.

3) Advocacy Website

An advocacy website contains content that describes a cause, opinion or idea (eg. fighting animal abuse).

4) Evaluating a website

These are the guidelines that evaluate the value of a website:

• Audience
• Authority
• Content
• Currency
• Design
• Objectivity

5) Multimedia

Multimedia is the combining of texts with other media elements such as graphics, animation, audio, video and virtual reality.

6) Virtual Reality (VR)

It is the simulation of real or imagined environment using computers. It usually appears as a 3D space and is used for games.

7) E-commerce

E-commerce is the short form for electronic commerce which is a business transaction that occurs over the Internet. There are 3 different types of E-commerce as listed below.

• Business to consumer (B2C) Sale of goods to general public
• Consumer to consumer (C2C) One consumer sells directly to another
• Business to business (B2B) Business providing goods and services to other businesses

8) FTP
FTP stands for file transfer protocol. It allows you to upload or download files with other computers on the Internet.

In conclusion, I have learnt new concepts in IT from this powerpoint that i did not understand before. I have also learnt that the Internet was created to allow scientists at different locations to share information and it was also made to function if part of the network was disabled. I feel that by learning how to make a website or blog, it will benefit me in future as i can use these ways to reach out to a wider group of people in this IT age.
